Part 2 structure

Examiner gives cue card:

  • Describe [topic] — main subject
  • You should say: [3-4 bullet points] — content guide
  • And explain [final reflection] — analytical angle

1 phút chuẩn bị + 2 phút nói.

Example cue card

Describe a person who taught you something important. You should say:

  • Who this person was
  • What they taught you
  • When this happened
  • And explain why this lesson was important

Time allocation (2 minutes)

Opening (15-20 seconds)

Introduce the topic naturally:

  • "I'd like to talk about my grandfather, who was probably the most influential figure in my early life."

Not: "OK so I will describe a person." (mechanical)

Bullet 1: Who (20-25 seconds)

  • Identity + relationship to you + brief background

Bullet 2: What they taught (25-30 seconds)

  • The specific lesson + context
  • Concrete details — what they said/did

Bullet 3: When (20-25 seconds)

  • Time period + circumstances
  • Why memorable

Final reflection: Why important (25-30 seconds)

  • Impact on you THEN + LASTING impact NOW
  • Connect to your current life/values

Closing (5 seconds, optional)

Natural wrap: "...so yeah, that's why his influence still resonates today."

Total: ~110-130 seconds, leaving 10-20 sec buffer.

Storytelling technique

Don't list facts. Tell a STORY:

List style (band 6.5)

"His name was Thomas. He was a fisherman. He taught me to be patient. This happened when I was 8. I still remember today. It is important because patience is good."

→ Choppy, no detail, no emotion.

Story style (band 8)

"My grandfather Thomas was a fisherman in a small coastal village, and every summer I'd visit and help him with the early morning catch. He had this quiet way of demonstrating patience — sometimes we'd sit for hours waiting for fish, and he'd just smile and say 'they'll come when they're ready.' I was 8 at the time and constantly impatient, but watching him I started to understand that some things in life can't be rushed. That lesson has stayed with me — whenever I'm tempted to force an outcome at work, I remember those quiet mornings."
