Self-correction technique — fix mistakes without breaking fluency
ID 364697Self-correction = sign of awareness, không phải failure. Học cách correct gracefully.
Tại sao self-correction OK
Many candidates think any mistake = bad. Wrong. Examiners VALUE:
- Mistakes corrected = awareness of language
- Mistakes ignored = unaware (lower band)
- Mistakes corrected awkwardly = OK but disrupts fluency
- Mistakes corrected smoothly = ideal (band 8+)
4 self-correction techniques
Technique 1: Quick swap
When you say wrong word, just say correct one:
"My job is very satis... satisfying."
"I goes... I go to the gym daily."
"It was 25... 35 dollars."
Quick swap, no apology, move on. Natural.
Technique 2: Reformulation
When sentence structure is going wrong, restart:
"The reason that I started this hobby because... let me rephrase — I started this hobby because..."
Or more naturally:
"The reason... well, what got me into this hobby was..."
Technique 3: "I mean" / "or rather"
For minor corrections that don't disrupt much:
"It happened in 2020 — I mean 2021."
"He was my classmate, or rather, my colleague at the time."
"It's about 5 km away — actually a bit more, maybe 7."
Technique 4: Build on the error
If you said something inaccurate, just clarify next sentence:
"My favorite is autumn. Well, I should say, autumn AND spring — I can't really choose between them."
Turns mistake into nuance.
What NOT to do
Don't 1: Excessive apology
"I'm sorry, I made a mistake. Sorry, my English is bad."
→ Multiple apologies = anxiety + lower band perception.
Fix: Just correct + continue.
Don't 2: Restart entire answer
"Wait, let me start over. Actually, can I redo this?"
→ Lose 10-15 seconds + disrupt fluency.
Fix: Reformulate mid-sentence.
Don't 3: Dwell on the mistake
"...so I went... no wait, I went... actually I went to... I'm sorry, I'm confused..."
→ Spiral. Confidence drops.
Fix: Pick a version, commit, move on.
Don't 4: Over-correct
Fixing minor errors that aren't really errors:
"It is interesting... or is it interesting? Maybe it's intriguing... no, fascinating..."
→ Word-searching too much. Sounds uncertain.
Fix: First reasonable word is usually OK. Move on.
