Tại sao distractors exist

IELTS test makers want to differentiate between:

  • Candidate who CATCH the answer
  • Candidate who PICK first thing heard

Distractors = false answers planted before/around real answer.

6 distractor patterns

Pattern 1: "X but actually Y" (correction)

"It's at 7 PM — actually, let me check — yes, 7:30."

→ First mention (7 PM) = distractor. Real answer = 7:30.

Signal: "actually", "let me check", "sorry, I meant"

Pattern 2: Negative reversal

"You don't need to book the regular room, but the conference room — yes, that requires booking."

→ Surface: "don't need to book". Real meaning: conference room needs booking.

Signal: complex negation, "but", "however"

Pattern 3: Plan change

"We had planned the meeting for Friday, but it's moved to Monday."

→ First: Friday (distractor). Real: Monday.

Signal: past tense "had planned", "originally", "but it's now"

Pattern 4: Multiple speakers, different views

Student A: "I think we should do option X."

Tutor: "Hmm, X is interesting, but I'd recommend option Y instead."

→ A advocates X. Tutor recommends Y. → Question "what does the tutor recommend" = Y, NOT X.

Signal: speaker change + counter-recommendation

Pattern 5: Detail change in fast speech

"Send to 23 Park Road — sorry, 32 Park Road."

→ First number (23) sounds plausible. Real (32) follows quickly.

Signal: subtle correction with "sorry"

Pattern 6: Listed options

"You can choose from blue, red, or green — but for this size, only red and green are available."

→ "Blue" mentioned but eliminated. → Real options: red, green.

Signal: "only", "except", "however, for this case..."

How to defend against distractors

Defense 1: Don't commit answer too fast

Wait 3-5 seconds after hearing potential answer. If speaker continues without correction → answer confirmed.
