Reading MCQ band 8 — 4 options elimination + paraphrase trap
ID 647053Reading MCQ 4 options thường có 2 plausible. Học elimination + paraphrase analysis.
MCQ format
Question + 4 options. Pick the ONE that BEST matches text.
Unlike Listening MCQ (3 options), Reading MCQ has 4 — more distractor patterns.
4 elimination patterns
Pattern 1: 1 obviously wrong
4 options usually include 1 that's clearly wrong (off-topic or contradicts text directly). Eliminate first.
Leaves 3 options to differentiate.
Pattern 2: 2 close + 2 different
Often 2 options are similar (both reasonable) and 2 are very different. Real answer is usually one of the 2 close options — read text VERY carefully to distinguish.
Pattern 3: Partial match traps
Option that partially appears in text:
- Text mentions concept X positively
- Option says "X is the main solution"
- But text says X is one of several solutions
→ NOT the best answer
Pattern 4: Opposite extreme
Text: "X has both advantages and drawbacks" Option: "X is highly beneficial" → Too extreme. Text balanced. Eliminate.
Strategic reading
Step 1: Read question carefully
Identify what's being asked. Specific or general?
Step 2: Read all 4 options
Don't pick first plausible. Read all 4.
Step 3: Locate text section
Use keyword from question to scan to relevant paragraph.
Step 4: Read text carefully
Underline phrases that relate to each option.
Step 5: Eliminate + select
Cross out wrong options. Pick best of remaining.
Paraphrase analysis
Reading MCQ answers are usually PARAPHRASED from text:
- Text: "emerging economies have experienced unprecedented growth"
- Option: "developing nations have seen significant expansion"
Same meaning, different words. Look for synonym chains.
Common paraphrase patterns
- Active ↔ Passive
- Nominalization (verb → noun)
- Synonyms
- Specific ↔ General
Band 8 readers recognize paraphrases instantly.
Common errors
Error 1: Pick option that matches text WORDS exactly
Text: "researchers found" Option A: "researchers found that..." Option B: "a study demonstrated that..."
If Option A matches exact words but Option B is correct paraphrase, pick B. Test makers don't reward word matching — they reward MEANING matching.
