Avoiding memorized phrases — examiners detect và penalize

ID 764842

Memorized answers reduce score. Học cách prepare CONTENT (ideas/vocab) thay vì FORMS (full sentences).

How examiners detect memorization

  1. Robotic delivery: monotone, even rhythm — sounds like recitation
  2. Disconnect from question: answer doesn't quite fit what was asked
  3. Sudden vocabulary spike: 3 basic sentences then 1 sophisticated phrase — clearly memorized
  4. Templated openings: "Well, that's an interesting question I've never really thought about before..." every single time
  5. Pre-prepared examples: same example for every Part 2 topic

Penalty: examiner caps score at 6.5 even if other criteria higher.

What's OK to prepare vs not

✓ OK to prepare

  • Vocabulary by topic (technology terms, environment terms)
  • Idiom phrases (use 1-2 per session naturally)
  • Common question types (work, hobbies, hometown)
  • Personal stories (your real life examples)
  • Opinion frameworks (PREP, COMPARE-CONTRAST)

✗ NOT OK

  • Full sentences memorized verbatim
  • Generic templated intros for any Part 2
  • Pre-written 2-minute Part 2 scripts
  • Memorized "impressive" idioms forced into every answer

Common memorized phrases (avoid)

Overused intros

  • "Well, that's an interesting question, let me think about that for a moment..."
  • "In today's modern society / In this day and age..."
  • "There are many people who think that..."
  • "It's a controversial topic, but in my opinion..."

Overused transitions

  • "To be honest with you, I would say that..."
  • "From my point of view, I personally believe that..."
  • "Last but not least..."
  • "In a nutshell..."

Overused idioms (forced)

  • "It's a double-edged sword"
  • "Every cloud has a silver lining"
  • "At the end of the day" (every answer)
  • "When all is said and done"

Examiners hear these 50+ times per day. Detected instantly.

Better approach: prepare CONTENT, deliver SPONTANEOUSLY

Example: preparing Part 1 "hobbies"

Bad prep (memorized)
