6 inversion patterns
Pattern 1: Negative adverbs at start
When negative adverb at sentence start → invert.
Triggers
- Never / Rarely / Seldom
- Hardly... when / Scarcely... when
- No sooner... than
- Not only... but also
- Not until / Only when
- Under no circumstances / At no time / In no way
Examples
- "Never has unemployment been so high."
(not: "Never unemployment has been so high.")
- "Rarely do we see such generosity."
- "Hardly had I started when the phone rang."
- "No sooner had we arrived than it began to rain."
- "Not only does climate change threaten ecosystems, but it also disrupts economies."
- "Under no circumstances should we ignore this warning."
Pattern 2: Only + adverbial
When "only" + time/place/way at start → invert.
Examples
- "Only after years of research did scientists confirm the theory."
- "Only in extreme cases is intervention justified."
- "Only by working together can we solve this."
- "Only when we acknowledge the problem can solutions emerge."
Pattern 3: So + adjective + that
"So vast was the destruction that recovery took decades." ("The destruction was so vast that..." — standard)
Literary/formal feel. Use sparingly.
Pattern 4: Such + be
"Such was the impact that schools were closed." ("The impact was such that..." — standard)
Formal narrative writing.
Pattern 5: Conditional inversion (drop "if")
- "Had I known, I would have acted differently." (= "If I had known...")
- "Were he here, he would agree." (= "If he were here...")
- "Should you need assistance, please contact us." (= "If you should need...")
IELTS application
Formal writing benefit. Speaking less common (more conversational "if").
Pattern 6: Place + verb (literary)
- "On the table lay an old book."
- "In the corner stood a grand piano."
Very literary. Rare in IELTS but acceptable.
When to use inversion
Best context (Writing)
- Opening or closing sentence of essay (creates impact)
- Topic sentence of important paragraph
- Emphasizing a counter-argument
- Conclusion for memorable ending
