What band 9 candidates do differently

1. Predict synonyms BEFORE audio

Band 8: predicts answer keyword Band 9: predicts 3-4 possible synonyms for each blank

When audio plays, band 9 already mentally has paraphrase ready → catches answer instantly.

2. Track ALL speakers in Section 3

Band 8: tracks main speaker switches Band 9: tracks every speaker change + their stance on every micro-topic

No confusion when answering matching questions.

3. Hear weak forms perfectly

Band 8: catches most weak forms (a, the, to, of reduced) Band 9: catches EVERY weak form, including reduced "have" ("could've" = could have)

Never miss negatives hidden in fast speech: "don't" vs "do" detected at native speed.

4. Recover from any mistake in <5 seconds

Band 8: 1 missed answer → may panic, miss 2 more Band 9: 1 missed answer → immediately refocus on next question

5. Listen for tone/intonation cues

Band 8: focuses on words said Band 9: also catches tone:

  • Rising intonation = uncertain, often signals upcoming correction
  • Falling tone = definitive, answer
  • Stress on word = important, often the answer

6. Filter out distractors automatically

Band 8: sometimes confused by intentional distractors Band 9: brain auto-filters distractor patterns:

  • "Actually, no..." = correction follows
  • "I thought it was X but it's Y" = Y is answer
  • "3...wait, 5" = 5 is answer
