Basic reported speech

Direct: "I am studying English," she said. Reported: She said (that) she was studying English.

Changes:

  • Tense: present → past
  • Pronouns: I → she
  • Time/place: now → then, here → there

Tense backshift rules

Original → Reported

  • Present simple → past simple
  • "I work" → he said he worked
  • Present continuous → past continuous
  • "I am working" → she said she was working
  • Past simple → past perfect
  • "I worked" → he said he had worked
  • Present perfect → past perfect
  • "I have worked" → she said she had worked
  • Will → would
  • "I will work" → he said he would work
  • Can → could
  • "I can swim" → she said she could swim
  • May → might
  • "I may come" → he said he might come
  • Must → had to (for obligation)
  • "I must leave" → she said she had to leave

When NOT to backshift

General truths (still true):

  • "The Earth is round." → He said the Earth is round.

Recent statements (just happened):

  • "I'm tired." → He said he is tired.

Past perfect (already past):

  • "I had finished." → She said she had finished. (no further back)

Modals would, could, should, might, ought to — already past form:

  • "I would help." → He said he would help. (no change)

Neutral statement

  1. state — formal statement

"He stated that the report was complete."

  1. announce — public/important

"She announced she was retiring."

  1. mention — brief

"He mentioned he had visited Paris."

  1. remark — casual observation

"She remarked that the weather was unusual."

  1. observe — analytical comment

"He observed that productivity had declined."

Agreement

  1. agree — accept proposal

"He agreed to help."

  1. admit — concede (often something negative)

"She admitted she had been wrong."

  1. confess — admit something serious

"He confessed to the mistake."

  1. acknowledge — recognize formally

"She acknowledged the criticism was fair."

Disagreement

  1. deny — refuse to accept

"He denied he had said that."

  1. dispute — challenge a claim

"She disputed the figures."

  1. refute — disprove with evidence

"He refuted the accusation with data."

Suggestion/Recommendation

  1. suggest — propose

"She suggested (that) we postpone."

  1. recommend — advise

"He recommended (that) we wait."

  1. propose — formally suggest

"She proposed a new approach."

  1. urge — strongly recommend

"He urged us to act quickly."

Request/Demand

  1. request — formal ask

"She requested more information."

  1. demand — forceful ask

"He demanded an explanation."

  1. insist (on) — refuse to budge

"She insisted on paying her share."

Question

  1. wonder — internal question

"He wondered whether to apply."

Verb structures

Different verbs require different structures:

Verb + that-clause

say, state, announce, mention, suggest, claim, argue

"She suggested that we leave early."

Verb + object + that-clause

tell, inform, remind, persuade, convince, warn

"He told me that he would help."
