Why hedging matters
Academic register = careful, evidence-based claims. Absolute statements = naive/unsophisticated.
Band 7 candidate writes: "Climate change will destroy the planet." Band 8 candidate writes: "Climate change is likely to cause significant damage to ecosystems globally."
Same underlying point, but band 8 hedged = more credible.
5 categories of hedging vocabulary
1. Modal hedges (auxiliaries)
Degree of certainty:
- Strong: must, will, should
- Medium: would, could, can
- Weak: may, might
Examples
- "This may indicate a broader trend." (weak/cautious)
- "This could suggest underlying issues." (medium)
- "This would depend on policy choices." (hypothetical)
2. Adverb hedges (probability/frequency)
Probability:
- arguably, possibly, perhaps, presumably, conceivably
- likely, probably, almost certainly
- supposedly, ostensibly, allegedly
Frequency:
- often, frequently, typically, generally, commonly
- rarely, seldom, occasionally
Extent:
- partially, largely, substantially, largely
- to some extent, to a degree, in part
Examples
- "Arguably, the most pressing challenge is..."
- "This largely explains the discrepancy."
- "Typically, such interventions yield..."
3. Verb hedges (reporting verbs)
Instead of "X is true":
- suggest ("data suggest that")
- indicate ("this indicates a shift")
- imply ("the findings imply")
- appear ("it appears that")
- seem ("this seems to confirm")
- tend to ("such systems tend to")
- point to ("evidence points to")
Examples
- "Research suggests that bilingualism enhances cognitive flexibility."
- "Recent trends indicate a growing concern about privacy."
- "This appears to be a global phenomenon."
4. Noun hedges (claim categories)
Framing claims as:
- possibility / probability / likelihood
- assumption / supposition / hypothesis
- tendency / trend / pattern
- interpretation / understanding / view
Examples
- "There is a strong possibility that this trend will continue."
- "This assumption underpins much of the current debate."
- "Under one interpretation, the data support X."
5. Phrase hedges (full expressions)
- "In many cases / in certain circumstances"
- "Under specific conditions"
- "To a large/lesser extent"
- "There is some evidence that..."
- "It might be argued that..."
- "With some exceptions..."
- "All things being equal..."
- "Generally speaking..."
Hedging combinations
Band 8 uses 1-2 hedges per claim:
Light hedge (1)
"Climate change may cause significant economic damage."
Medium hedge (2)
"Climate change is likely to cause substantial economic damage in many regions."
Heavy hedge (3+) — too many
"Climate change possibly might perhaps cause some economic damage in certain circumstances."
