Question

"Some people believe that universities should focus on academic theory while others argue that practical skills should be prioritized. To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

Band 8 sample answer (~290 words)

The debate over whether universities should emphasize abstract knowledge or job-ready skills has intensified as graduate employment outcomes face growing scrutiny. While both elements have merit, I largely agree that practical skills deserve greater weight in modern curricula, though not at the complete expense of theoretical foundations.

Those who advocate for theoretical focus argue that universities exist to cultivate critical thinkers rather than train workers. There is genuine value in this position: theoretical understanding equips graduates to adapt as industries evolve, and abstract reasoning skills transfer across diverse contexts. A philosophy graduate, for instance, may move into law, journalism, or technology consulting precisely because their training emphasized thinking frameworks over specific tools.

However, I find the case for practical skills more compelling, particularly given today's economic realities. University education represents a substantial investment — often involving significant debt — and students reasonably expect tangible employment prospects upon graduation. Programs that integrate internships, project-based learning, and industry-relevant tools produce graduates who can contribute productively from day one. Singapore's universities, which embed work attachments directly into degree requirements, consistently report higher employment rates and faster career progression for their alumni. This model demonstrates that practical orientation need not sacrifice intellectual depth.

The most effective approach, in my view, integrates both elements rather than treating them as opposites. Theoretical frameworks provide the conceptual foundation; practical applications make that knowledge actionable. Universities that strike this balance — teaching the underlying principles while also developing competencies employers value — serve students best in both immediate career outcomes and long-term adaptability.

In conclusion, while theoretical learning retains essential value, the practical dimension can no longer be treated as secondary. A curriculum that consciously weaves both is the path most likely to produce graduates ready for the demands of contemporary careers.
