Error analysis method — turn mistakes into systematic improvement
ID 366653Mock test scores don't improve if you don't analyze errors. Học 5-step framework.
Why error analysis matters
Many candidates take 30+ mock tests, score doesn't improve. Why?
They don't analyze errors deeply.
Taking test → noting score → moving on = wasted practice.
Real improvement: deep error analysis = 70% of value of taking the test.
5-step error analysis framework
Step 1: Categorize each error
For each wrong answer:
Listening errors:
- Spelling (e.g., wrote "thirty" but spelled it "thirthy")
- Number confusion (13 vs 30)
- Missed answer (didn't hear it)
- Wrong meaning (heard but misunderstood)
- Distractor (picked first mention)
- Out of range (didn't reach in time)
Reading errors:
- Vocabulary (unknown word in passage)
- Misunderstood question (didn't grasp what asked)
- Time pressure (rushed, no time)
- Wrong inference (over-interpreted)
- Distractor (picked wrong MCQ option)
- TFNG confusion (false vs not given)
Writing errors (when self-checking):
- Grammar (article, agreement, tense, conditional)
- Vocabulary (wrong word, collocation, register)
- Coherence (unclear connection, abrupt jumps)
- Task response (missed part of question)
- Off-topic content
Speaking errors (record + analyze):
- Hesitation (long silences)
- Repetition (same word multiple times)
- Pronunciation (unclear sounds)
- Grammar (verb form, tense)
- Vocabulary (basic when sophisticated expected)
- Topic development (too brief, undeveloped)
Step 2: Identify pattern
After 5-10 mock tests, count errors by category.
If 10/40 Listening errors are SPELLING → spelling is your bottleneck. If 15/40 Reading errors are TIME PRESSURE → speed is your bottleneck.
Patterns reveal where to invest study time.
Step 3: Root cause analysis
For your top error pattern, ask: WHY does this happen?
Example: "Spelling errors in Listening"
Dig deeper:
- Don't know spelling of common words?
- Hear correctly but write wrong?
- Forget to capitalize?
- Confuse similar-sounding letters (B vs P)?
Each sub-cause has different fix.
Step 4: Targeted intervention
Design drill for specific weakness:
Spelling weakness fix:
- 50 IELTS common-spelled words drilled daily
- Anki/Quizlet flashcards
- Practice writing while listening
Time pressure fix:
- Reading speed drills
- Time management training
- Practice skipping hard questions
Grammar agreement fix:
- 30 sentences daily focusing on subject-verb agreement
- Write essays consciously checking agreement
Intervention specific = improvement specific.
Step 5: Re-test + verify
After 2 weeks of intervention, take new mock test.
Compare errors:
- Did spelling errors drop from 10 to 3? ✓ intervention working
- Did spelling errors stay at 10? ✗ change intervention
