Anxiety impact

Research shows test anxiety reduces performance by 10-15%. Translated to IELTS: band 7.5 candidate can score 6.0-6.5 if anxious.

24 hours before

Don't

  • Last-minute cramming (vocabulary, grammar)
  • Take new sample tests (creates fresh failures)
  • Drink coffee/energy drinks (heightens anxiety)
  • Stay up late "reviewing"

Do

  • Light review only (re-read 2-3 lessons you've already mastered)
  • Pack test bag night before (ID, water, snack, pencils, eraser)
  • Plan transport route (arrive 30 min early)
  • 30-min walk or light exercise
  • Healthy dinner + 8 hours sleep

Morning of test

Wake up routine

  • Wake 2 hours before report time
  • Protein breakfast: eggs, yogurt, nuts (NOT pastries — sugar crash)
  • Avoid caffeine if not your daily habit (creates jitters)
  • Light stretching
  • 10 min meditation or breathing

Transport buffer

  • Arrive 30+ min early
  • If using public transit, take earlier train than needed
  • Anxiety doubles if you're rushed

At test center (waiting)

What to do

  • Visit toilet 10 min before start
  • Sip water (not gulp)
  • Slow breathing: in 4 sec, hold 4 sec, out 4 sec
  • Visualize success (you completing test calmly)

What NOT to do

  • Talk to other candidates about difficulty
  • Check phone for last-minute tips
  • Review notes (creates panic if you don't recognize something)

During test — anxiety recovery techniques

Technique 1: Box breathing

If you feel panic rising:

  1. STOP, pencil down
  2. Breathe in 4 seconds (silent)
  3. Hold 4 seconds
  4. Breathe out 4 seconds
  5. Hold 4 seconds
  6. Repeat 2-3 cycles

Total 20-30 sec lost. Worth it.

Technique 2: Refocus on task

If mind drifts to "I'm going to fail":

  1. Acknowledge thought ("OK, that's anxiety")
  2. Return attention to current question
  3. Read question slowly, word by word

Thought ≠ reality. You're still progressing.

Technique 3: Difficulty reframe

If passage feels too hard:

  • "This is hard for EVERYONE taking this test"
  • "I don't need to understand everything — just answer questions"
  • "My job is to maximize points, not master content"
