4 criteria Task 1

1. Task Achievement (TA) — fully address task
2. Coherence & Cohesion (CC) — logical flow
3. Lexical Resource (LR) — vocabulary
4. Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA) — grammar

TA — Task Achievement

Band 8 standard

• Fully covers ALL key features
• Clear overview present
• Well-supported with data
• Word count ≥ 150

Band 7 falls short on

• Some features under-described
• Overview weak or missing
• Some inaccuracy in data
• Word count borderline

Common TA errors

1. No overview → max band 6
2. Overview lists data instead of trends → weak
3. Missing comparison when multiple items → lose points
4. Under 150 words → penalty

Overview rule

2-3 sentences containing:

• Total scope ("all increased")
• Most notable pattern
• NO specific numbers (numbers go in body)

CC — Coherence & Cohesion

Band 8 standard

• Clear paragraph structure (intro + overview + body 1 + body 2)
• Logical sequencing
• Cohesive devices varied
• Referencing tight

Band 7 falls short on

• Acceptable structure but less polished
• Some basic linkers overused
• Occasional unclear reference

Common CC errors

1. One giant paragraph for body → poor structure
2. "Firstly... secondly... finally" for charts → mechanical
3. "This" without clear reference → confusing

LR — Lexical Resource

Band 8 standard

• Wide range of vocabulary
• Less common items used naturally
• Few collocation errors
• Topic-appropriate terms

Band 7 falls short on

• Some basic vocabulary
• Limited variety
• Some word form errors

Common LR errors

1. Word repetition: "increased" 8 times in essay
2. Wrong word form: "information" used as countable
3. Generic adjectives: "big", "good", "bad" instead of "substantial", "beneficial", "detrimental"
4. Missing chart-specific verbs: "went up" instead of "climbed", "surged", "increased steadily"

Chart-specific vocabulary requirement

For band 8, must use varied:

• Trend verbs: rose, climbed, surged, plummeted, fluctuated
• Adverbs: steadily, sharply, dramatically, marginally
• Adjectives: substantial, marginal, considerable, modest

GRA — Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Band 8 standard

• Variety of structures
• Mostly error-free
• Rare errors don't impede meaning

Band 7 falls short on

• Some complex structure errors
• More frequent slips
• Over-reliance on simple sentences
